Women who drink alcohol are unknowingly putting themselves at increased risk of cancer
Jacksonville (HealthKnowItAll) - Women who drink alcohol are unknowingly putting themselves at increased risk of cancer.

This is the finding of a new study performed by researchers from Britain’s University of Oxford, who studied more than 1.3 million women.

All women were between the age of 50 and 64, and all drank various amounts of alcohol.

Types of cancer that women were at risk of included breast, rectal and liver cancers.

Previously it has been thought that a moderate amount of alcohol, for example a glass of wine a day may actually benefit health.

This apparently is not the case as by drinking even 1 glass of wine a day women are putting themselves at risk of a variety of cancers.

“It’s a level of consumption that generally has been found in scientific studies to be associated with a relatively low risk of harms,” said Robert D. Brewer of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “But low risk does not mean no risk.”

Researchers state that 5% of all cancers in US women are caused by alcohol consumption, based on the findings of the British study.
