Boston (HealthKnowItAll) - Obesity may actually be helpful for heart patients who have been proven to live longer than those of a moderate weight.

This study finding is incredible as usually one associates obesity with increased health risk and poor health.

Obesity is actually a leading cause of heart disease, another fact that makes this finding quite hard to believe.

In actual fact, obesity is said to be now the leading cause of preventable death in America because of all the side effects that come with it.

According to cardiologist Carl J. Lavie, MD, of the Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans studies have proven that obese heart patients as a group, live longer, and are less prone to strokes than thinner heart disease patients.

“If we could prevent obesity or limit it, it is very clear that we could reduce heart disease and deaths from heart disease,” Lavie said.

He says that although being obese is bad for the heart, those who are leaner and have heart disease, usually are given a worse prognosis.

Study findings can be found in the May issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
