The study was led by Dr. Nikolaos Scarmeas from Columbia University in New York.

Their work was done to see if a Mediterranean diet would be able to protect people from developing Alzheimer’s, as well as to see if it would reverse the effects of dementia or Alzheimer’s.

A diet such as this includes a lot of fish, oil, vegetables, among other foods.

Researchers followed 1,393 volunteers who had no memory problems at the start of the study, as well as 482 who had mild cognitive impairment.

Those who followed the diet were 48% less likely to progress from mild cognitive impairment into dementia.

This compared directly to people who followed a more normal diet.

On top of that, those who had no memory problems at the start of the study cut their risk of developing cognitive impairment by 28%.

The study has been published in the journal Archives of Neurology.
