Boston (HealthKnowItAll) - The health risks associated with obesity are just as dangerous as those seen in smokers, say researchers of a new study which appears in the Lancet.

The study was performed by researchers from the Oxford University in the UK.

The researchers claim that being obese can trim as many as 10 years off a person’s life, but even being moderately overweight can also shorten life.

We all know the dangers of smoking, mainly lung cancer and heart disease, which can also significantly shorten a person’s life.

The researchers analyzed over a million health records from people from all corners of the world to reach their study finding.

Dr Gary Whitlock of Oxford University says that by reducing the extra weight that you carry, you may be doing yourself a huge favor, when it comes to lengthening your lifespan.

Researchers stress that it is much easier to avoid gaining excess weight than it is to lose it.
