Combining two old, safe antibiotics maybe the next weapon against tuberculosis
Boston (HealthKnowItAll) - Combining two old, safe antibiotics maybe the next weapon against tuberculosis.

According to scientists, the combination of and clavulanate proved very effective at preventing more than 12 of the most common forms of drug resistant tuberculosis.

Because of the positive study finding, a company is already preparing to begin human trials of the drug combo to further investigate its effectiveness.

Drug resistant TB is very dangerous because the virus has become immune to leading drug therapies.

Researchers knowing this fact, have been scrambling to come up with new combinations of drugs in an attempt to find one that can put a dent in TB’s armor.

Each year in the world more than 1.5 million human lives are lost because of drug resistant tuberculosis, the majority of those in developing countries.

The findings are published in today’s journal Science.
