Experimental Drug From Vertex Pharmaceuticals Helps Reverse Hepatitis C

Boston (HealthKnowItAll) - An experimental drug is proving to be very effective at reversing symptoms associated with hepatitis C.

The drug is called telaprevir, and is manufactured by Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc.

The drug was compared in a clinical trial with drugs currently on the market to treat the condition, and faired much better when it came to length of treatment time.

Patients on the drug did experience some unsettling side effects, including severe rash, nausea and anemia.

Telaprevir is not currently approved for the treating of hepatitis C, but Vertex Pharmaceuticals plans to apply to the Food and Drug Administration in the near future.

It is estimated that more than 3.2 million
Americans are living with hepatitis C.
