Results of a new study show that the cervical cancer vaccine called gardasil can also protect older women from contracting the disease.

Originally it was thought that the vaccine was only good for females 9 to 26 years of age but this appears not to be the case.

In a study conducted by researchers from Colombia, those women between 24 and 45 years of age were less likely to develop HPVs if given gardasil.

Gardasil protects women from contracting many different types of HPVs which are up to 70% responsible for all cervical cancer cases.

Currently gardasil is approved for use by women 9 to 26 years of age, but its maker, Merck is trying to get their vaccine approved for use by older women.
