Johnson And Johnson Developing Drug For Resistant Tuberculosis
June 4, 2009 by admin

There is a new experimental drug being developed by Johnson and Johnson that has shown promise at treating drug resistant tuberculosis.
The drug is called TMC207, and is in early stages of development but so far, the results have been very positive.
Drug resistant TB is very dangerous because the virus will not respond to traditional medicines developed to combat it. The virus is very prevalent in certain parts of Africa.
The drug was tested on a group of study participants, and added to a combo of 5 other drugs to make a coctail.
Researchers tested the drug plus the coctail, comparing results to participants who did not receive the new drug as part of their treatment.
When given to test subjects, those who received TMC207, showed a total reduction of TB trace bacteria from their respiratory tract, results much more positive than those who just received the regular combination therapy.
TMC207 is the first tuberculosis drug to be developed in the last 40 years, thus health officials are very optimistic for its future at combatting the disease.
