It is being reported that Merck will not be applying to the FDA for approval of their heart failure drug because it did not meet study goals.

Heart failure occurs when the heart becomes weak to the point where it is unable to sufficiently pump blood throughout the entire body.

The drug goes by the name rolofylline and according to Merck’s executive director for cardiovascular research, Dan Bloomfield the study results were very disappointing.

The drug was being tested to determine if it could reduce risk of death or re-hospitalization up to 60 days after initial treatment but failed to impress.

Merck stated that it will continue to develop their drug, and at some point down the road they will hopefully be able to apply for FDA approval for it.
