Drug company Roche have announced plans to enter final testing of their experimental diabetes drug called aleglitazar.

This drug candidate is just one of many currently in final stages of development for treating people with diabetes.

The drug showed promise in earlier clinical trials when it came to reducing risk of heart problems, high blood pressure and even stroke risk.

A study published in the Lancet medical journal featuring 300 participants, showed the drug’s ability to control blood sugar and cholesterol levels in participants, both of which are key for diabetes patients.

According to roche, heart attacks are very common in people who have diabetes, a reason why the company decided to develop their new drug.
