HealthKnowItAll) - A drug used to treat nausea has been proven to be safe for pregnant women to reduce their morning sickness.
Up until now, there have been no drugs proven safe for pregnant women to take to prevent morning sickness during their first 3 months of pregnancy.
The drug is called metoclopramide and in a large study of more than 82,000 pregnant women proved safe for the fetus.
Researchers compared the health of babies from mothers who took metoclopramide against the health of babies whose moms did not take the drug.
They could not find any increased risk of birth defects in babies whose moms took metoclopramide to reduce their symptoms of morning sickness.
It is estimated that up to 80% of pregnant women experience some form of morning sickness during their pregnancies.
