Boston (HealthKnowItAll) - According to U.S. Department of Agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack, people should not be afraid of contracting swine flu from eating U.S. pork.

Swine flu has taken the world by storm, killint more than 150 people in Mexico, and also popping up in the U.S. Canada and the UK.

“I want to reiterate that U.S. pork is safe. While we in the U.S. are continuing to monitor new cases of H1N1 flu, the American food supply is safe, stated Vilsack.

Other countries are not taking any chances, as so far the countries of China, Russia and Ukraine have banned imports of pig meat from the United States.

Health officials are continuing to stress that despite the fact that swine flu originated in pigs, eating pig meat does not pose a risk of contracting it.

“USDA is reminding its trading partners that U.S. pork is safe and there is no basis for restricting imports of commercially produced U.S. pork and pork products,” he added.
