On Monday, Dr. Thomas Frieden will travel to Atlanta to be sworn in as the new leader of the Centers For Disease Control And Prevention.
“He can’t walk across the hall and find a sympathetic mayor and get stuff through. It’s a different playing field,” said Dr. Jeff Koplan, a former CDC director.
Frieden, 48, formally the Health Commissionor of New York City has been called many things by many different people but he does get things done, a fact that will serve him well in his new post.
While one of the top dogs in New York, he spearheaded tough anti-smoking campaigns across the city, and introduced legislation to ban the use of trans fats in city restaurant meals.
Frieden admits that his new job will come with a boatload of challenges, but says he is ready for the new experience and will give his position his all.
