According to the results from a study presented at a sleep conference in Seattle, sleeping too little and too much can raise risk of developing diabetes.

Researchers are not sure what the link is between lack of, or too much sleep and risk of diabetes, but say that it is definitely there.

The study also found of note, that black people tended to be at an increased risk of developing diabetes than white people, but both races were at risk of developing the condition.

Researchers stress the importance of 8 hours a night sleep requirement for adults, with any more or any less putting us at risk of health hazards including diabetes.

“These findings suggest that race significantly influenced the risk of obesity conferred by short sleep duration,” the lead author of the study said in a statement. “As obesity is associated with diabetes and sleep apnea, it may be that more blacks are at risk for sleep apnea and diabetes, which are both linked to cardiovascular disease.”

For their study researchers used data derived from the National Health Interview Study, featuring more than 29,000 participants between the ages of 18 and 85.
