Washington (HealthKnowItAll) - Health officials have stated that the cost of dealing with the recent outbreak of salmonella in the US could top the 1 billion dollar mark.
More than 700 cases of salmonella poisoning have been reported across the country and 9 deaths have been confirmed as a result of tainted peanut butter from Peanut Butter Corperation of America.
The company in question, has since filed for bankrupcy and closed 2 of their manufacturing plants.
The FDA and FBI have launched an investigation into goings-on at the peanut plant, that has already revealed some interesting findings.
It appears that top executives may have knew of tainted product at the Georgia plant, yet despite knowing that their products were contaminated, they said nothing, allowing their peanuts to be used in the making of more than 2000 different products which have since been recalled.
On Tuesday, Nielsen Research Group released a report stating that peanut butter sales across the US have dropped to the lowest levels that they have ever been at since the company began tracking food data.
