FDA Attacks Novartis Due To Facebook Drug Advertising

novartis_facebook Boston (HealthKnowItAll) - The pharmaceutical company Novartis is in trouble with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to tactics used when advertising their drugs on Facebook.

Novartis has been using Facebook as a tool to help with the marketing of their drugs.

They have gotten into quite a bit of trouble with the FDA though in the way in which they are using the social-networking site to help expand the notariety of their drugs among consumers.

The FDA has sent a letter to Novartis, after the FDA Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising and Communications cited Novartis for 4 violations.

These were all largely related to a popular Novartis drug, and the way the company used the “Share” widget on Facebook.

When users on Facebook would “Share” the information about the drug with friends on Facebook, it would post in their newsfeed.

The issue the FDA has though is that it only shows positive effects of the drug, not any of the side effects or risks associated with it.

This could lead to more attention being given to these type of advertising tactics by the FDA.
