The study, which was published in the journal Health Affairs, focused in the cost of food in the U.S.

Americans are spending thousands of dollars each year on food, and researchers from the University of Washington aimed to look into cost differences of healthy and unhealthy food.

They wanted to gauge the cost of eating food that adheres to U.S. dietary guidelines.

The fact that the majority of Americans are overweight is a warning sign that it is time to once again stress healthy eating.

Unfortunately though, the researchers found it is far more expensive to eat healthy.

With Americans running low on expendable income due to the economy, cutting out added expenses such as fruit may be somewhere they turn to.

Researchers found a direct link between the cost of food, and how healthy it was.

Food loaded with calories from saturated fat was found to be far less expensive than foods with healthy fats, vitamins, fiber, etc.

Cargill Ground Turkey Recall A Result Of Salmonella Thu, 04 Aug 2011 02:04:33 +0000 admin Boston (HealthKnowItAll) – Cargill, one of the largest meat processors in the U.S., has announced a massive recall of ground turkey.

Cargill confirmed that they have recalled 36 million pounds of ground turkey.

All of the ground turkey included in the recall came from their processing plant in Arkansas, and was packaged between March 7th and June 27th.

The announcement of the source of the salmonella outbreak, the ground turkey, was confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) during routine sampling.

The ground turkey caused the salmonella outbreak that has sickened over 75 people, and contributed to the death of a resident of the state of California.

Salmonella Heidelberg is the strain of salmonella that is linked to the outbreak.

This particular strain is highly resistant to antibiotics and can cause a lot of health problems.

Hot Dogs Are Full Of Fat, Unhealthy Processed Meats Tue, 02 Aug 2011 01:58:50 +0000 admin Washington (HealthKnowItAll) – A non-profit organization has started a campaign against the American favorite at baseball parks around the country, the hot dog.

The non-profit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has launched a major campaign to alert the entire U.S. about the dangers of consuming hot dogs.

Hot dogs are consumed at rapid rates across the U.S., especially during the summer when there are BBQs taking place in just about every neighborhood on a weekly basis.

What the group wants consumers to know though is that hot dogs are very dangerous to your health.

The campaign aims to raise awareness around the fact that hot dogs can result in an increased risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other health complications.

The message rings loud and clear on a billboard at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway which reads, “Warning: Hot dogs can wreck your health.”

Hot dogs are very similar to consuming processed meat, according to the group as well as medical research.

Consuming processed meat can cause health problems, as a hot dog contains roughly 50-grams of the meat on average.

By eating processed meat, you are greatly increasing your risk of developing the diseases above, according to the non-profit group.

Birth Control Made Free By The Obama Administration Tue, 02 Aug 2011 00:49:23 +0000 admin Washington (HealthKnowItAll) – President Obama and the Obama administration have freed birth control and other contraception for anyone in the U.S. with private health insurance.

Those with private health insurance are no longer going to have to shell out a co-pay the next time they go to purchase contraception such as birth control.

Last year, President Obama passed a major health overhaul, and part of it was to add new drugs to the list of preventive medicines.

This list contains medicines where there would be no charge in terms of a co-pay to acquire the medicine.

The biggest addition was contraception, any contraception approved by the FDA.

This led to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announcing co-pays for birth control going away for good.

Effective August 1, 2012, private health insurance companies are no longer going to be able to charge for the contraception.

These co-pays, up to now, ranged from $10 to $30 for many Americans on a monthly-basis.

The major question mark still is whether or not this will cover condoms, as they is believed to be cleared up in the months ahead.

Drugs beyond regular birth control will be covered, including the morning after pill, Plan B.

Other additions included as part of the health overhaul include free testing to screen for the human papillomavirus (HPV), known as a major cause of cervical cancer, for women over 30.

More Muscle Means Less Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes Sun, 31 Jul 2011 13:14:05 +0000 admin Boston (HealthKnowItAll) – A new study released this week has found that by increasing muscle mass, you can actually greatly lower your risk of type 2 diabetes.

The study was led by researchers from the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and focused on over 13,500 adults in total.

The adults all went through a survey as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III.

The idea was to see if there was any link between muscle mass and the overall risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

What researchers found was that for every 10% increase in muscle mass that was found in those surveyed, their risk of diabetes decreased.

This was found as there was a decrease in their resistance in insulin, something which leads to type 2 diabetes development.

Insulin resistance is one of the leading pre-cursors of type 2 diabetes.

With nearly 80 million people in the U.S. who suffer from this impending type 2 diabetes condition, the hope is that this will help people learn how to control it and beat it before it forms into the full-blown disease.

More Americans Beating Cancer Fri, 11 Mar 2011 10:47:57 +0000 staff More people who are diagnosed with cancer are surviving, according to a new report issued by the CDC.

Cancer treatment has come a long way over the last 25 years, meaning that now being diagnosed with a form of the disease is no longer viewed as a death sentence.

Cancer patients, depending on the type of cancer they are diagnosed with have an array of different treatment options, ranging from surgery and radiation, to chemotherapy.

The CDC says that now one in 20 adults diagnosed with the disease are beating it, thanks also in large part to earlier detection.

40 years ago, according to the CDC there were upwards of three million Americans living with a history of cancer, but this number now is over 11 million.

“There are some cancers that we can’t prevent and they are terrible tragedies,” said CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden. “But there are many that are preventable.”

Salmonella May Fend Off Cancer Thu, 10 Mar 2011 21:50:37 +0000 staff New research indicates that salmonella bacteria may actually be useful when it comes to fighting cancer.

Salmonella is usually feared by humans as it can make us very sick but according to researchers from the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Centre the bug can actually fend off cancers.

“Many bacteria and viruses – even harmful ones – can be used to fight disease”, said Masonic Cancer Clinic medical director Edward Greeno, who led the study.

The bacteria appears to reduce cancers of the gut, colon and spleen, all areas that the salmonella bug also targets.

It is kind of ironic to think that a bug that we all fear so much can actually fend off something that we fear even more.

Desperate Women Turning To The HCG Diet Thu, 10 Mar 2011 19:32:11 +0000 staff Many people are weighing in on the controversial HCG diet which is becoming very popular amongst American women looking to shed unwanted pounds.

The diet involves daily injections of a pregnancy hormone called HCG which is derived from a pregnant woman’s urine, and works in combination with a 500 calory a day diet.

For a healthy female adult the average daily caloric requirement is 1500 to 1800 per day, so women who starve themselves by only consuming 500 calories a day are putting themselves at major health risks.

Putting this into perspective, one can consume 500 calories a day by eating a large bowl of cereal, eating a couple of slices of pizza, or even by drinking a smoothy.

As for the HCG component of the diet, one only has to wonder where women are getting this hormone from.
