Surgeons Perform Heart Valve Surgery Without The Surgery Part

June 2, 2009 by

Doctors have successfully replaced a valve in the heart of a woman from Utah without performing traditional surgery.

The procedure performed by surgeons at Intermountain Medical Center is the first of its kind, and maybe the beginning of a new trend when it comes to certain heart operations.

Rose Felice was the lucky recipient of the heart valve, inserted into her leg via an artery and transfered to her heart by a catheter.

The great grandmother was told she needed heart surgery, but at her age, the operation would be too risky, thus this procedure was recommended.

The procedure, conducted last month appears to be a total success and is an alternative for high risk patients who need valve replacement.
